Why I'm a UFF-UF Member

  • As management at two companies, I saw how unionized employees were protected and how that made us a better company. UF faculty need a union working for them in these troubled times. John Schueller, Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering
John Schueller, Department of Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering
  • I joined UFF twenty years ago because I thought a union was the best weapon the faculty had to defend its rights against meddling by the legislature.  If anything, this threat has expanded in recent years, and now includes the governor and trustees who wish to dilute the vision of a great state university by imposing a corporate model.  Only UFF stands in the way. Peter Hirschfield
    Peter Hirschfeld, Department of Physics
  • There is a phrase in Swahili, Umoja ni nguvu — Unity is strength. Without the union each faculty member stands alone. But none of us want to stand alone. When my job was in trouble and I had to fight for it, UFF stood with me, fought for me, and gave me a voice when I didn’t think I had one. When things are up, you have a union. When things are down — and when you really need help — you have a union. Having a voice as an NTT faculty member at UF means having a collective voice at all times.
Rose Lugano, Lecturer, Swahili Language and Literatures
  • I love my work recruiting, mentoring and advising students, but as a faculty member in an 'assistant in' advising line, sometimes I wonder where I fit in at UF. Despite all the ways non-tenure track faculty contribute to the university, our own rights and benefits are not always top priority. Being in UFF gives me a voice and creates stability in an unstable political environment like this last legislative session. We have power when we unite, plain and simple.
Regan Garner, Assistant Director & Advisor, Honors Program

Host a UFF Meeting in Your Department

If you would like to discuss faculty concerns, including health insurance and benefit changes as well as legislative issues, UFF leaders would be happy to come to your department to talk with colleagues. UFF can provide lunch or coffee as well as give an update and answer questions. Please email president@uff-uf.org if you are interested.

Get involved with Membership

Our membership campaign is active throughout the year with office visits and informal conversations with non-members. We need members to talk to their colleagues and share why UFF is important. You can do as much or as little as you like, but please make a commitment to do something. Click here to sign up.

Weingarten Rights

These rights, established by the Supreme Court in 1975, are employees’ rights to representation at meetings called by supervisors or administrators where there is reason to believe that discharge or disciplinary action may result. To invoke these rights, an employee must state to the employer that he/she wants a representative present; the employer has no obligation to ask if the employee would like representation. UFF members have a right to UFF representation at such meetings.

Beyond voting

Within politics, a letter-writing campaign targeting your congressional representative and senator would mean far more than your vote did. Participating in your local Republican, Democratic, Libertarian, or Green Party organization would give you still more influence over American politics.
